The Masonic Fraternity takes good men and makes them better through moral and philosophical teachings.
The basic purpose is to make "better men out of good men." There is an emphasis placed on the individual man by strengthening his character, improving his moral and spiritual outlook, and broadening his mental horizons.
Freemasonry started in England in 1717 when the Grand Lodge of England was formed and expanded rapidly to the colonies and further west during the expansion of the United States.
